โ„น๏ธ How the scores work, what the symbols mean, and where the data comes from
๐Ÿ“– Key, what these terms mean
Best months
The months with the most comfortable daytime weather.
Pleasant months
Months with a comfortable average high and air that isn't sticky.
PM2.5
Fine-particle air pollution, averaged over a year.
Estimated cost
A figure derived from partial data, not measured directly.
Your fit
How well a city fits the weights you chose, 0โ€“100.
City feel vs. country stats
Two different safety measures, never blended.

How "Your fit" works: each city scores 0โ€“100 per component, affordability ($700/mo all-in โ‰ˆ 100, $4,000+ = 0), climate (pleasant months in full, warm-but-humid months at 40%, square-root curve), safety (Numbeo city safety index where surveyed; country hard-stats rating otherwise), internet (measured median, 250+ Mbps = 100), tourist stay (180+ days = 100), and for relocation: tax, nomad-visa access, legal exposure and residency path (green 100 / yellow 55 / red 15). Your sliders weight the components; your fit score is the weighted average. Default scouting weights are affordability 5 ยท climate 3 ยท safety 7 ยท internet 5 ยท stay 1. Where a dataset doesn't cover a city, that component is dropped and the rest re-weighted, missing data never penalizes a city. The exception is an active conflict zone, which scores 0 for safety rather than being skipped. No cost data โ†’ no fit score at all.

The City Finder merges every dataset on this site into one comparable row per city: monthly cost from the Cost of Living Explorer, pleasant-weather months from three years of measured hourly climate history, safety from the two-layer Safety Explorer, measured internet speeds from Ookla open data, and visa, tax and legal ratings from the country research. Nothing here is opinion, every dot and number traces back to a source dataset you can open.

The Your fit column is your own weighting, not our editorial ranking. Pick an intent, scouting a trip (cost, climate, safety, internet, stay length) or planning to relocate (adds tax, nomad visas, legal exposure and residency paths), then drag the sliders or tap a preset. The table re-ranks live. A city missing a dataset has that component dropped and the remaining weights re-normalized, so missing data never punishes a city; a city with no cost data gets no fit score at all rather than an inflated one.

Questions about the City Finder

How is the fit score calculated?

Each component becomes a 0-100 value: affordability ($700/mo all-in scores 100, $4,000+ scores 0), climate (pleasant months count fully, warm-but-humid months count 40%, on a square-root curve), safety (the Numbeo city safety index where a survey exists, or the country hard-stats rating), internet (measured median download, 250+ Mbps = 100), tourist stay (180+ visa-free days = 100), and for relocation intent: tax, visa access, legal exposure and residency path (green = 100, yellow = 55, red = 15). Your fit is the average weighted by your sliders.

What counts as a "pleasant month"?

A month where the average daily high lands between 60ยฐF and 87ยฐF and humidity comfort data doesn't classify a large share of hours as muggy or worse, from measured hourly weather history (2023โ€“2025, ERA5). The month strip shows exactly which months qualify. For fit scoring, warm-but-humid months also earn partial credit, tropical hubs are livable, just sweatier.

Why is the safety dot sometimes hollow?

A solid dot is city-level perception, Numbeo's resident survey of how safe the city feels. A hollow dot means no city survey exists yet, so we show the country's hard-statistics rating (homicide and road-death rates) instead. The two layers are never blended, and conflict-zone countries show an advisory instead of a rating.

What is the best city for digital nomads overall?

Under the default scouting weights, the top of the table mixes low-cost high-comfort cities (Arequipa, Cusco, Cuenca) with classic hubs (Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Taipei, Penang). But the honest answer is that "best" depends on your weights, that's why the column is called "Your fit", not "Score". Drag the sliders and watch the ranking change.

How does the compare feature work?

Tap + Compare on any city tile (or tick the Compare box in table view, or on a city profile) to add it to your compare tray, up to four. Then open the side-by-side view to see cost, climate, safety, internet, visas and tax next to each other.

What do the warnings on a tile mean?

Tiles stay quiet unless something is genuinely a problem. ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ Poor air means yearly fine-particle pollution (PM2.5) is at least 35 ยตg/mยณ, seven times the WHO guideline. ๐Ÿข Slow net means the measured median download is under 50 Mbps. ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Low safety and โš ๏ธ Conflict zone come from the Safety Explorer. The temperature is the average daily high for the current month, from measured weather history, not today's forecast.
