Privacy policy

The short version: you can use every page on AbroadChart without an account, and we don't sell or share your information. The only personal details we receive are the ones you type into one of our forms.

Last updated 2026-09-25.

What you send us

Only if you fill in one of these forms:

• "Email me this shortlist": your email address, the cities in your shortlist and a link to your results.
• "Ideas + Bugs" (the button in the corner of every page): whether it's an idea or a bug, your message, the page you were on, and your email only if you choose to add it.
• "Want help applying for a visa?": your name, email address, the country you're interested in, your timeline, your passport and a link to your results.

Form entries are stored by Netlify, which hosts this site, and we use them only to reply to you. We don't sell them, and we don't pass your details to a visa or relocation provider unless you ask us to connect you.

Analytics

We count visits with GoatCounter, a privacy-friendly service that sets no cookies and does not record personal information. It tells us which pages are read and which links are clicked, in aggregate, not who you are.

We don't use advertising trackers, and we don't set cookies.

Saved in your own browser

A few preferences are kept in your browser's local storage so the site remembers them. They never leave your device and you can clear them at any time in your browser settings:

• light or dark theme
• °F or °C for temperatures
• which passport you picked on the City Finder
• the cities you've added to the compare bar
• whether you view the City Finder as tiles or a table
• the US city you picked in the "what your money buys" calculator

Outside services a page may load

Like any website, these services receive your IP address and browser details when a page requests something from them:

• Netlify hosts the site and keeps standard server logs.
• Unsplash serves the city photos.
• Google Maps shows the location map on city pages.
• Open-Meteo supplies the live "right now" weather line on city pages (it receives only the city's coordinates).
• Exchange-rate feeds (open.er-api.com and a currency dataset on jsDelivr) supply today's rates on the Cost of Living and Currency pages.

Some links take you to insurers, visa services and other providers. Their own privacy policies apply once you're on their site. Some are affiliate links; see our affiliate disclosure.
