Your home pension and health cover
๐ฌ๐ง The UK State Pension can be paid abroad, but it only rises each year if you live in the EEA, Switzerland or a country with a UK social-security agreement; elsewhere it stays frozen at the rate when you left. NHS cover ends when you move abroad for good.
๐จ๐ฆ CPP is paid wherever you live. Old Age Security is paid abroad if you lived in Canada for 20+ years after age 18; otherwise it stops after six months away. Provincial health cover ends once you're no longer resident.
๐ฆ๐บ The Age Pension can keep being paid abroad, but after 26 weeks away the rate can drop if you have fewer than 35 years of Australian residence. Medicare ends when you leave permanently.
๐ช๐บ Within the EU, state pensions are paid wherever you live, and pensioners can register with the local health system using an S1 form. Outside the EU, check your country's pension agreement with Portugal.
Pension rules change; confirm with your pension service before you move. The tax notes on this page are written for Americans.
